Three of my auto-focus zooms. L-R: 14-24mm, 28-200mm, and 28-300mm. The 28-200, while its range is duplicated and surpassed by the 28-300 next to it,
makes for the ultimate travel lens - smaller and much lighter than the 28-300. The 28-300 is a fantastic lens that also has VR (vibration reduction) built in.
Nikon says that gives me 3 more stops of leeway. The two longer zooms have their bayonet hoods fastened in their "travel" position.
The bayonet hood on the 14-24mm zoom is quite sturdy, but not removable, but that is by design, to aid in protecting its bulging front element.
It's considered best practice to place a UV filter on the front of most lenses - in case of a mishap, it's always less expensive to replace a filter than to
replace a damaged front element. On the 14-24mm, this is not possible, hence the bayonet hood that helps protect it.
